Tales of The UnXpected.

When Bloc Party dropped the ‘k’ in ‘Block’ to derive their name, it acquired an aesthetically pleasing quality to it when you saw it and lost nothing when you pronounced it. When the local rock band, The UnXpected, dropped an ‘e’ and stepped up the ‘x’ from what was originally a proper English word, it just looks inarticulate. But their music is a different story.Their music, my friends, is just excellent. When they get in gear, they completely rock the roof off the joint. Their gig is a tight set of rock music covers and original tracks on Thursdays at Wala-Wala. The very hot & feisty frontwoman, Shirlyn Tan, is a fabulous performer & instantly made me forget the disappointment of seeing the band name in pseudo-StudyCaps.

Above is the entire quoted post from an incoming link. Thanks for the compliment though but it got us a little confused…. so anyway…

We didn’t realise spelling our name as such would make it look like STUDLYCaps. The hidden sexual meanings behind the big U and big X has yet to be revealed so yeah y’all be patient hokay?

To look inarticulate… maybe if we spelt it like The UnxpecTED, when we perhaps take in a new member called TED, now there’s a thought!

*Ladies and Gentlemen….Ted on… tambourine*

The author of this blog called it StudyCaps…but link to StudlyCaps. HeNcE oUR ConFuSIoN!
Quite frankly I am disappointed the author called my drummer Brennan instead of Brandon. When you pronounce those two names, it DOES sound different! (Unlike Bloc vs Block and UnXpected vs Unexpected)

Disclaimer: this post was meant to be lighthearted.. I AM the fiesty frontwoman leh…

I remember that movie All Dogs Go to Heaven.. it made me cry!

I will always remember this old dog in particular….

Bobby

I’ve seen Bobby in Holland Village since 10 years ago when I used to live at Holland Grove Road… The hawkers love him and he never goes hungry.

Bobby is like the Holland Village Mascot.. no wait.. he’s like the Holland Village boss!

He responds to his name and loves satay.. he also howls at the direction of Al Dente during the Hungry Ghost Festival…
I am sad to hear he’s gone. Holland Village will not be the same without this ol’ dawg…

RIP Bobby.

19th of march 2006 marks the day i got on stage to play for my other band WAR ENSEMBLE at a metal gig in hougang mall…. it has been 3 years since i totally destroyed myself on stage, and loving every minute of it.. i got on stage blasted out the first few beats …and a feeling of euphoria ran thru my body…its like the chuging of the guitars from justin anf jason…the boom of the bass from zakk and the intense sheer power of the vocals of the young and talented kadir totally over took me… m/ the last time i trashed myself was at metallica’s launching of st’ anger at the hard rock cafe in 2003, and ..oh m gawd… i fucking love it man..!! WOOOOOHOOOO!! FUCK YEAH!! m/

we covered a whole set of lamb of god songs

www.lamb-of-god.com no they are definatly n not a christian band ;-)

some people may call metal music just noise..some people say its the devils music, call it what they want…

but to me metal is a life line, a reason, an outlet, a religion..and most of all a teacher..!! m/

to those who have helped me along the way…i thank you…you know who you are… for if it aint for all your encouragement, love and support..i wouldnt be able to still play drums and love every minute of it on stage

to those who put me down and tell me no way.. i thank you too..!! for you guys are the fuel that lights my dying torch along the way..

Jack

We play at Wala Wala every monday as Shirlyn’s Trio. He’s the coolest, humble and fun guy to gig with… this was taken at Forbidden City (Indochine) during one afternoon gig.. after a quick lunch at HOOTERS. (Not much to hoot about but we were just plain hungreeeeee)

My Papa Jack passed away in the Philippines on friday after a long fight with brain tumor,I got the terrible news on the phone right before I went to get ready to open for Jason Mraz...

It was very hard to get on stage and be happy.. but the show must go on. I know he will be proud of me… and I know I sing every Queen song for him.

Rest in peace Papa Jack, as Dream Theater would say , The Spirit Carries On.....

Here’s the article from ST, a review on Jason Mraz’s sell out concert.

Cheeky livewire sizzles
by Corrie Tan

CONCERT

MR A-Z

JASON MRAZ

Esplanade Concert Hall

Last Friday

IF JASON Mraz ever got tired of singing, one suspects he can go on to be a comedian, given the laughs and exuberant audience interaction he sparked off, at his first ever acoustic concert here for this year’s Mosaic Music Festival.

Nudging the sell-out 1,600-strong audience to sing along right from the beginning, he quipped in a coy whisper: ‘All the boys sound like girls now – we are one.’

And sing the cheeky livewire did, belting out two hours’ worth of songs from his albums – Waiting For My Rocket To Come (2002) and Mr A-Z (2005) – as well as some gems from his unplugged album, Jason Mraz Live (2001).

Kicking off the night with underrated lovelorn ditty Plane, the ethereal voice ebbed and flowed, bobbing into the flawless improvised derivations of scat singing he is famous for.

Even with a spartan set-up of Mraz himself on guitar and close friend- the hulking Toca Rivera – on percussion, there was nary an awkward silence with their easy banter and spontaneous jokes.

‘I don’t know how he comes up with this all the time,’ said Rivera at one point in the show.

They even plunged into an unrehearsed rendition of hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas’ Where Is The Love, much to the surprise and delight of fans.

Yet even with the high octane performances where Mraz pranced around onstage – including a particularly spirited moment where he toppled Toca’s standing cymbal – there were tinges of melancholy with Mraz’s achy vocals on After An Afternoon and Please Don’t Tell Her filling the hushed hall.

One must also credit homegrown four-piece band The UnXpected, helmed by guitarist-singer Shirlyn Tan’s powerhouse vocals, for setting the appropriate timbre for the concert.

With their dynamic acoustic rock covers, like Dressed In Black, they filled up the opening half-hour nicely.

Certainly, they were as good value for money as Mraz who got two standing ovations and responded with three encore songs.”

We are glad the journalist thinks we’re value for money… but DRESSED IN BLACK is our original lah….. :(
